July 2021 First Sunday Drive - Pescadero Creek

Sunday, Jul 11, 2021 - 04:00am to Sunday, Jul 11, 2021 - 08:00am
Pescadero
California

The drive can't come to a better timing!  The heat wave came over to the San Francisco Bay Areas during the weekend of the July FSD, and the inland temperature reached up to 110 degrees.

We were saved by the drive and had escaped from the heat.

There were 20 plus Mercedes-Benzes, 34 people and 2 dogs showed up to this fantastic drive. We drove through the redwoods, and down to the coast with cool breezes coming from the coast.

Everyone including the dogs enjoyed the sunshine, and the picnic table style takeout lunch at Duarte's.

FIRST SUNDAY DRIVE RECAP SUNDAY,

June 6, 2021 LAFAYETTE TO NILES

What is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days! Well, we of the SFBAMB SecPon had a perfect June day traveling over winding roads through beautiful east bay hills and canyons and regional parks with stunning vistas over valleys and reservoirs, ending in the liTle village of Niles (Fremont).

We had 32 attendees in 23 cars, most of them Benz’s but also a Ferrari, Saturn Sky, and Aston Martin! The start of this drive was Philz Coffee in Lafayette. Here greetings were exchanged, newbies and first timers were introduced, and directions reviewed. From there we wound our way up to Inspiration Point on Wildcat Canyon Road, overlooking San Pablo Reservoir. A`er a brief stop there, the road then took us to Grizzly Peak with stunning views over Berkeley and the Bay. We eventually connected with Redwood Road, which took us down to Castro Valley; from there we entered the very scenic Palomares Canyon. This canyon then intersects with Niles Canyon, along which we made our way into Niles. Most of us gathered for a great lunch at Joe’s Corner Cafe, where we dined inside; some members ambled down to the nearby Bronco Billy’s pizza, which was closed for dining in, but the takeout pizza was rated highly! Total count: 32 members & guests, driving 23 automobiles, 120 bicyclists passed, and seven regional East Bay Parks! — Nadine & Barton Lane

We will meet at the Starbucks in the Terra Linda / Safeway shopping center - 260 Northgate Dr, San Rafael, CA 94903 between 0900-0945hrs for coffee and meet new and old friends.  We’ll start the sign ins at 0945hrs and a prompt departure from the parking lot at 1000hrs at north end of the center’s parking lot, after the stop light, it will be north (left turn) on to Las Gallinas Ave, then we are off to our FSD adventure … please be aware of bicyclist and cows along the way!

Marin has been famous for cheese since 1865. Today we're going to visit a few of the most famous cheese producers and drive some of the most beautiful roads in California at the same time. Enjoy the summer scenery, drive through the magnificent redwood trees on Lucas Valley Road, then rolling hills as we turn (left) onto Nicasio Valley Road heading north toward our first stop.

Nicasio Valley Cheese Company

5300 Nicasio Valley Road

Nicasio, CA

(Just past the town of Nicasio on the right side of the road.)

The La Franchi family enjoyed their traditional cheeses of their Swiss homeland and dreamed of making their own. Their organic dairy was the perfect resource to enable them to pay homage to their heritage.

We then continue north on Nicasio Valley Road to Pt. Reyes – Petaluma Rd., a right turn heading east, we will shortly arrive at our second stop.

Marin French Cheese Company

7510 Pt Reyes Petaluma Rd
Petaluma, CA 94952

(Left side of road, about 10-15 min travel time from last stop)

The oldest continuously operating cheese factory in America! Marin French has specialized in hand made Brie and Camembert since 1865. In 2005 it was the first American producer to best France in international competitions.

We then continue (left turn) east on Pt. Reyes – Petaluma Rd (for 10 minutes) where we make a left turn on to Hicks Valley Road.  Rolling hills, winding turns, great vistas lead us to the Marshall – Petaluma Rd.  A left turn heads MBZr’s west towards Marshall and Highway #1.  A left turn onto Highway #1 heads us south down the Tomales Bay water views and our final destination, The Cow Girl Creamery at Point Reyes Station.

Cowgirl Creamery

80 4th Street

Point Reyes Station, CA

In 1997, Sue Conley and Peggy Smith built a small creamery in downtown Point Reyes Station and began making handcrafted cheese with local organic milk. They now produce three fresh and six aged cheeses.

While this is the end of our tour, it will be time for a later lunch with many great restaurants to choose from, or find a picnic table outside of the creamery and enjoy your selection of many cheeses that you have purchased!  Thank you for your participation.

May 16, 2021_M-B Classics and Coffee

Sunday, May 16, 2021 - 03:00am to Sunday, May 16, 2021 - 06:00am
Burlingame
California

What a great turn out!

Another perfect sunny California weather with the coastal fog burned off gradually as we sipped our coffee, and admired the rare classics owned by our section members.

A total of 15 Mercedes-Benzes rolled in the parking lot; the models varied from 1966 250SE to 2007 SL550.  24 participants dinned in at a 24 Hrs. Café for lovely breakfast, and each member had the opportunity to introduce his or her Mercedes-Benz over the meal with a full attention from others.   It was great to seeing old friends, along with meeting new potential members. Originally, the meet was supposed to last 2 hours, and it got extended to 3 hours because there were so much to talk about. The subjects were randomly chatted among the smaller groups, repairing, conversations from old technology to new, and the life in general.

Many new members are seeing how the events are held and organized, and excited of wanting to volunteer and organize the next events.  The momentum of volunteering and donating are rolling in, and we’re taking this positive force to a good use. – John Goode

Napa - Ft Bragg Skunk Train - Hwy 1 Road Trip

Fort Bragg
California

Napa/Skunk Train/Coast Highway Road Trip

On May 8, 2021, 9 members from the San Francisco Bay Area Section were fortunate to meet for a short private tour of the grounds and cave of Vine Cliff Winery in St. Helena, followed by a scrumptious picnic lunch made by the Winery’s resident chef (Chef Tom, who also happens to own a Mercedes-Benz ’99 SLK230).

The group then met with the rest of the trip participants in Napa.  After a quick rest stop at the Lumberjacks Restaurant in Willits, the group of 8 cars and 14 participants traveled to Fort Bragg.  After checking into their hotel, the group enjoyed drinks and a delicious dinner in a private dining room at the Noyo Harbor Inn Restaurant. Early the next morning, a few drivers took the winding and steep road to Willits and back just for fun. Upon their return to Ft. Bragg, the entire group then hopped aboard the Skunk Train for a short ride through the redwood forest to Glen Blair Junction. During the ride, we learned a bit about the historic Skunk Train, which has been in operation since 1885.  Some enjoyed the Skunk Beer amber ale and popcorn available on the Train.

Upon returning to Fort Bragg, some participants separated from the main group to continue their weekend adventures. The rest of the group began driving down Highway 1, for a beautiful, but windy, drive along the California coast.  Eventually, we decided to drive back through the woods and a few of us had a quick picnic snack under the trees, before heading home.

Thanks to John Goode and Janet Welter for organizing such a fun and interesting weekend of food, wine, redwoods, twisty roads, and coastal view!  - Kamrin MacKnight
